12/16/09 Letter of Inquiry

December 16, 2009

Honorable Michael J. Carr
Genesee County Clerk
900 S. Saginaw Street
Flint, MI 48502

Dear Clerk Carr,

In reference to the announcement by County Treasurer Daniel T. Kildee and his resignation effective December 31, I am submitting this letter of inquiry. It is my understanding that the county appointment committee could begin deliberations on the appointment process this Friday. I am seriously considering this position and the opportunity to advance the work of the most innovative, entrepreneurial county treasurer's office in Michigan.

I served as Dan’s Assistant Treasurer from 1997 through 2004, and thus, possess a direct working knowledge of all office operations and the Treasurer's duties as prescribed by law. The County Treasurer has an expansive set of duties including the investment of county funds, collection of delinquent property taxes, administration of delinquent tax anticipation notes and disbursement of tax funds to local units of government to name a few.

The treasurer also serves as chairman of the Genesee County Land Bank, recipient of the 2007 Fannie Mae Foundation Innovations Award in Affordable Housing. I helped launch the land bank and recall how we engaged the C.S. Mott Foundation in 2000 by securing a planning grant, a step leading to a three-year program grant to establish a comprehensive land bank initiative.

Therefore, I am extremely interested in your selection process. In this era of government transparency, I would welcome the opportunity for a public interview to discuss my ideas on how to advance the work of this very important county office. I look forward to additional information and appreciate your consideration.

Sincerely,

Lee Gonzales
